Schubert was very proud of his Solemn
Mass in A flat of 1823, telling his publisher that he was striving to attain "the highest in Art". Emperor Joseph II encouraged the use of German ratherthan Latin in parish liturgy and Schubert responded with his German Mass, composed in 1827.
