Five programmes about social communication
2: Signals and the Shapes of Societies by Michael Chance
Dr Chance, who heads the Sub-Department of Ethology at Birmingham University, sees societies of monkeys, apes and humans as falling into two markedly different types - the hedonic and the agonistic. He believes that these are reflections of their communication systems, which are based ultimately on sets of signals.
