In Four Studies in Loyalty, published in November 1946, Christopher Sykes told the story of an extraordinary Persian named Bahram Kirmani, who claimed that he was, first and foremost, 'an Oxford man,' and commanded a wonderful fund of stories about his life among the notabilities of the haut monde in London at the end of the last century. These stories, alas, were based rather on imagination than fact; but when the Germans attempted to control Persia during the late war Bahram proved his loyalty to the university he never attended.
Christopher Sykes has now re-written Bahram's story as A Study in Loyalty. It seems that Bahram did in fact work for some time as a clerk for E.G. Browne, Professor of Persian at Cambridge - not, as his imagination later insisted, at Oxford.
