Performance on 3

on BBC Radio 3

A concert given earlier this month in Symphony Hall, Birmingham. The concert opens with Elgar's uplifting overture Cockaigne - subtitled In London Town - which was first performed at a Philharmonic Concert in June 1901, when London was on the threshold of the period of social splendour which is now known as the Edwardian era.

The young soloist Priya Mitchell then joins the BBC Symphony Orchestra for Walton's sensuous Violin Concerto. And Dvorak's forceful seventh symphony closes the programme.
