King and Country: That III-Starred Resolution

on BBC Radio 4 FM

On 9 February 1933 - only days after Hitler came to power in Germany - the Oxford Union voted ' That this House will in no circumstances fight for its King and Country.'
* I hope you do penance every night and every morning for that ill-starred resolution.' wrote a correspondent to the Union President. ' If the Germans have to be knocked out a second time it will be partly your fault.'
Martin Ceadel talks to the men of 1933 - Max Beloff. David Graham. Frank Hardie. Lord Hailsham of St Marylebone and Lord Longford-and re-assesses the debate's importance in the sequence of events which led to war.
