Suk (1874-1935)
Novak (1870-1949)
' Now I'm curious to know how you two will turn out. Artistic personality, that's the main thing.' Thus Dvorak exhorted his two most promising pupils to go their independent ways and in the years immediately following his death they emerged from his shadow to become the leading representatives of Czech music. For Suk, who married Dvorak's daughter, this was a slow and tragic path - his young wife died in 1905 within a year of her father.
