Caradoc was found guilty of man-slaughter and sentenced to two years' imprisonment. Mrs. Owen collapsed when she heard the news, and had to stay at Virginia Lodge while Mr. Owen went back to Wales. Mrs. Freeman left for Italy with Maud French, though she nearly decided not to go when she found out how many new clothes Maud was taking. Miriam and Janet went to Canada.
