Artists and the Landscape

on BBC Radio 3

Is the tradition of landscape painting still meaningful, or has it been superseded by artists who photograph the land, walk about in it or work with the natural materials they find there? In an age of abstract and conceptual art, how do artists use the landscape? Dr Frank Whitford visits painter
Roger de Grey , until recently President of the Royal Academy of Arts, in the Kent countryside where he has his studio, and hears about the pleasures and difficulties of painting nature.
