Having spent some time in Heidelberg Philip Carey returns to England to take a job in a chartered accountant's office. Rut finding this unbearable he goes home to the Vicarage at Blackstable and tells his uncle, the Rev. William Carey, that he wishes to go to Paris to study art. Mr. Carey refuses to allow him any money if he goes there, but Mrs. Carey wants to help him, and gives him her savings. He sets off for Paris to join his friend Herbert Lawson, who is already at an art school there, and finds that Hayward, another friend from Heidelberg days, is also there.
