1844-1908
Born into a land-owning family, Rimsky-Korsakov spent his childhood in the country amongst the folk music of Russia which was to have such a strong influence on him. He began his career as a naval officer but, on the strength of his early works, some of which were written at sea, he was offered the post of Professor of Composition at the St Peters-burg Conservatory in 1871. It was after taking up this post that he acquired his brilliant command of orchestral technique and produced the 15 operas which form the major part of his output.
