Gomes If Guarany
A four-act opera by Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Gomes , who died 100 years ago next month. It had a triumphant premiere at La Scala in 1870 and was described by Verdi as the work of a "truly musical genius". The opera tells of the love of Cecilia, daughter of a Portuguese nobleman, and Pery, a Guarani Indian. Cecilia's father disapproves of the match and wants her to marry another Portuguese, Don Alvaro. Sung in Italian.
